Moises Caicedo transfer: Chelsea agree British record fee for Brighton midfielder

Chelsea have agreed a deal with Brighton worth a British record £115m for midfielder Moises Caicedo.

The Blues are understood to be paying an initial £100m, plus £15m in performance-related add-ons. Caicedo arrived at the Chelsea training ground for his medical on Monday morning. The midfielder will sign an eight-year contract, with the option of a further year.

Brighton will have a sell-on clause that has been described as “significant” as part of the £115m deal to sell Caicedo.

The Blues will pay £100m upfront for the midfielder, with £15m in add-ons.

Half of the add-ons have been described as “quite easily achievable”, while the other half are considered “much harder” to achieve.

Liverpool agreed a £111m deal to sign Caicedo earlier this week but the move fell through when the 21-year-old informed the club he intended to join Chelsea.

Caicedo had been expected to travel to Liverpool for a medical on Friday after Jurgen Klopp’s side had a bid accepted by Brighton following a midnight deadline for bids on Thursday.

Chelsea are also trying to sign Lavia and lodged a £55m bid for the Belgian last Friday. But Liverpool’s need for reinforcements in the middle is urgent and they have refused to give up on the player, who wants to leave Southampton after their relegation from the Premier League. Liverpool raised their bid for Lavia on Sunday night, having previously refused to go over £45m.

The worry for Klopp, though, will be that there are indications that Lavia favors a move to Chelsea.

The Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has completed his move to Real Madrid on a season’s loan after Thibaut Courtois tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Liverpool have agreed a deal worth £60m for the Southampton midfielder Roméo Lavia. Chelsea are also trying to sign Lavia and Liverpool must convince the 19-year-old to move to Anfield.

Jürgen Klopp is desperate to strengthen his midfield and has been stung by Chelsea winning the race to sign Moisés Caicedo from Brighton. Caicedo, who is due to undergo a medical, is moving for a British record fee of £115m.
