How Suryakumar Yadav ditched the sweep shot and made his first ODI fifty in 18 months

Image
As  Suryakumar Yadav  reminded the world about his absent sweep shot. It reveals much about his discipline but also about how the times have changed. Sometimes, it’s the shot that a batsman doesn’t play that becomes the defining image of an innings. Like Sachin Tendulkar and the missing cover drive in his double ton at Sydney. Tendulkar’s was a 436-ball effort that spanned over 10 hours; the abstinence was remarkable. Suryakumar’s was a 49-ball affair and that he had to wage an internal battle to chain himself is charming and revealing of how difficult it has been for him to come to terms with his  ODI  record before this game. Of the 49, he faced just seven from the legspinner Adam Zampa, and five from the offspinner Matthew Short, but when he talks about sweep shots, he doesn’t necessarily mean spinners alone, as he deploys it to pacers as well. “I think it’s the first time I haven’t played a sweep. This has come from the Chandu Pandit school of ar...

Oscar Piastri extends McLaren deal through 2026

Image
McLaren  has extended rookie Oscar Piastri’s contract through to the end of 2026. The deal will keep Piastri and Lando Norris together as teammates for at least two more years, with the latter’s contract running until 2025. Piastri has impressed in his first F1 season so far, scoring 42 points and finishing second in the sprint race at the Belgian Grand Prix. The Australian, considered one of the brightest young talents in racing, joined McLaren after a lengthy legal battle between the British team and Alpine, who had initially had him to their driver academy. Piastri  won both the Formula 3 and Formula 2 championships before stepping up to F1. His first McLaren deal was multi-year, believed to be until the end of 2024, and McLaren has ensured his long-term future will be with the team. The length of Piastri’s deal is significant as it takes him into F1’s next planned rule change in 2026, suggesting the Australian has faith that McLaren can deliver a championship-calibe...

‘When Lionel Messi played with Argentina he alone was the boss but in PSG there was no structure’: Thierry Henry

Image
Lionel Messi  is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, but his spell at French club Paris Saint-Germain was largely underwhelming since he joined the club in 2021. PSG’s playing style did not seem to be suited to Messi’s strengths and former Arsenal legend Thierry Henry, who also played alongside the Argentine legend in Barcelona, has stated that Messi couldn’t play his best football at PSG alongside Kylian Mbappe and Neymar. Messi  netted 32 goals in 75 appearances for PSG and won the Ligue 1 twice, but could not win the UEFA Champions League.   Speaking to RMC Sport, Henry said that Messi’s time at PSG was not underwhelming. “No, I’ll say why. I remind you when I arrived at the beginning [as a pundit], on Amazon, I said “For me to play in this team, it’s a headache”. “I was talking about structure, organization. How do you play with all three (Messi, Neymar, and Mbappe) at the same time?” “When he ( Messi ) played with the Argentina team...

‘India defeat has given a psychological dent’ – Ramiz Raja reprimands ‘timid and scared’ Pakistan after Asia Cup exit

Image
Ramiz Raja  has cast a discerning eye on Pakistan’s selection and Babar Azam’s captaincy in the aftermath of Pakistan’s agonizing two-wicket loss to Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup Super Four. Ramiz feels that the resounding loss against India previously has left a psychological scar on the Pakistan team’s mind, which they carried against  Sri Lanka  in the must-win game. An all-round effort by India had left Pakistan wholly demolished in the Asia Cup, Super 4 encounter in Colombo. With the help of Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, who scored an unbeaten 122 and 111 respectively, India is in a commanding position. Pakistan managed to muster just 128, losing the match by a massive 228 runs. “The massive defeat against India has given a psychological dent to Pakistan. They seemed to carry that loss in this match as well. They looked timid and scared and failed to close out the game. Babar Azam and top order looked over-cautious. They lacked authority,” Ramiz said on his YouTube ch...
